Welcome
to St. Albert Alberta
The Dominion Government
of Canada officially declared St. Albert a “Village”
on December 7, 1899.
St. Albert has a perfect combination of mature neighbourhoods (which
are still young by comparison), and well-designed new neighbourhoods
offering the best in modern home construction.
We started with the advantages of rolling river valley terrain (which
means views... truly a rare experience in the Metro Edmonton area),
and added a neighbourhood planning policy that is sensitive both
to the environment and to the needs of families.
With few exceptions, the streets in St. Albert correspond to their
neighborhood name. That means the first letter of the street is
the same as the first letter of that neighborhood. For example,
Brandon Street is in the neighborhood of Braeside.
From the very beginning, the people of St. Albert have demanded
that their community be planned with how it will look and feel as
top priorities.
The result is one of the prettiest small cities in Canada, with
one of the highest proportions of green space anywhere.
Housing developers are required to dedicate generous park sites,
which are usually located adjacent to schools. Neighbourhood design
standards include 20-meter (66-foot) road rights of way, which must
include a grass boulevard between the street and the sidewalk, on
both sides. Developers are required to plant two trees per lot in
the boulevards (twice the Western Canadian standard!).
And these rigorous standards have been in force for 25 years, so
even the older neighbourhoods reflect the same attention to visual
and environmental quality.
Proof of St. Albert's family-oriented focus is the fact that 85%
of our developed area contains single family dwellings. (The City
of Edmonton, for example, is 60% single-family dwellings.) The balance
of our development is low-rise multi-unit dwellings and institutional
developments.
